I don't recall having health issues when I was in my teens but I remember when I was very young I would often have stomach discomfort and my mother told me that as a baby, I would cry for a very long time for no specific reason.
But now in my 40s, after years of trying to learn more about my body, I can tell you with confidence: the reason I was crying as a baby was because I had stomach cramps.
Because unknowingly, my parents were giving me milk, and I learned years later that I have a dairy intolerance. But back then it was not something very common, for people to know about intolerance. In my 30s I was living in London and I went through different diet regimens, I was vegetarian, then vegan for a while, then for a while, I only ate raw food - fruits and veggies - but I would always have a bloated feeling, no matter what I was eating, my stomach has always felt unsettled.
Things became worse after I gave birth to Joshua. I remember feeling so tired that I simply could not move my legs. I went to the doctor and they said I was depressed....Certainly, that could have been the case, but usually,y there is a reason you get depressed and they had no interest to look at the reason why. So I look in other places to find answers. I learned that I had low B12 and my iron levels were very low. I learned that I had a dairy and gluten intolerance as well as a high sensitivity to histamine. So there you go, welcome to my world! All these findings I discovered over the years and I am still learning about my body as I go.
Slowly, now I start to learn more and more about what works for me and what doesn't. There is no magic bullet and I still enjoy food, even though many of the things I used to love, I cannot have anymore. But I learned that nutrition is such an integral part of our lives and we should pay close attention to it. Food is our fuel so make sure that you fuel yourself in the right way.
