Pilates on REFORMER

Pilates voor beginner

Pilates has a major impact on your body over a longer period of time. The name REFORMER literally means: re-form, reshaping the body.

The secret of theReformer – which is essentially a sliding cart that moves by means of a pulley system, is the Reformeroffers a combination of resistance and supportfor the body. The Reformer uses springs to create varying degrees of tension and resistance. This helps to strengthen and lengthen the muscles at the same time. Working on the Reformer gives you the most wonderful opportunitiesmobility and stability to balance in all kinds of different positions.

Although nothing can replace the exercises of Mat Pilates (which uses your own body weight as resistance), experts agree that the Reformer has an advantage when it comes to effectiveness.

Another reason why the Reformer could have an advantage on the mat;it is an 'aid' in recovering from injuries. The Reformer is a great way to help you move while lying on your back in a non-weight-bearing position. This is especially useful and effective in the event of an injury. The moving part (the cart) provides both feedback and correction during the performance of an exercise.

There are 6 things you need to know before your first Reformer class

The Reformer is suitable for everyone!

No loose clothing; fitted / tight clothing is the motto. It is important that the instructor can see your body shapes clearly and see how your joints and muscles move. Loose clothing makes it much more difficult for the instructor to see your movement and correct it where necessary. No zippers; Do not put it in your pants or shirt to avoid damaging the Reformer.

Exchange your shoes for (the right) Pilates socks. Although you may be used to wearing shoes during exercise, Pilates is intended to be practiced barefoot and in socks in our studio. Therefore, wear special Pilates/non-slip socks so that you do not slip off the Reformer. Ask your instructor about it.

Pay attention. Pilates Reformer is not a training where you 'simply' perform an exercise. Always keep in mind that you are dealing with a moving device and springs. Therefore, listen carefully to what your instructor says. This not only ensures you can perform the exercise safely, but is also the key to activating the right muscles and getting the results you want.

Tell what you feel. Always let your instructor know how your body is doing before and during the lesson. Keep talking to your instructor about how the exercises feel, and whether the tension of the springs feels good. If something feels uncomfortable, let your instructor know.

Do not hurry; mindfulness is key. Although many workouts require speed, the Reformer requires control. If you move too fast you cannot control the moving part (the cart). Reformer Pilates is a completely different way of exercising.

It's about quality, not quantity. The Reformer helps to understand why quality is more important than quantity. You can't just do 150 reps, that's not what Pilates is about. You will do fewer reps, but realize that this will not make your workouts easier.
